On a journey from Sydney in search of a spot for convict secondary punishment in 1823, John Oxley discovered the river, which he named the Tweed after the river on the English/Scottish border. Captain Rous of the frigate Rainbow travelled up the river in a ship’s whale boat five years later. He called the river after the Tweed River, which runs between Scotland and northern England.
